Romanian president: Media campaigns – a threat to national security

Traian Basescu, Romania’s Presiden, maintains his standpoint regarding media campaigns that denigrate state institutions, which were listed among threats to national security in the country’s National Defense Strategy, writes Mediafax.

Basescu referred to the media campaign unfolded during presidential elections, which accused his family of alleged involvement in weapon trafficking. He also said that he does not consider media as a whole a threat but orchestrated smear campaigns.

Romania’s defense strategy, adopted by the Defense Council late June and sent to Parliament for approval, lists “orchestrated media campaigns that denigrate state institutions by disseminating false information” among threats to national security, beside terrorism, corruption and organized crime.
