Creative Quarter Design Festival starts this Saturday

Events, Innovation

Creative Quarter Design Festival, the quarter’s first big festival around Cismigiu park, inspired by UniCredit Bank, takes place May 18-26th 2019. The most active creative-cultural area in Bucharest proposes its visitors a circuit comprised of 60 events: exhibitions, conferences, parties, movie nights, guided tours, design fairs, discussions and workshops.

The festival’s opening takes place on May 18th, 19:00 o’clock, at Universul Palace (23-25, Ion Brezoianu Street), a Quarter’s emblematic building, together with the opening of three exhibitions:  Made in Creative Quarter, Mnemonics și UYDA by Ubikubi. They will be included in Noaptea Muzeelor (Museums’ Night) circuit.

The evening continues with a party at Beans&Dots, on Marinov’s music, in the same Universul Palace.

Made in Creative Quarter, exhibition presented by Forte Partners and hosted by the space AWE. Adaptive Work Environment will be seen for the first time in Romania after it represented the Creative Quarter at Madrid Design Festival at the beginning of 2019. The exhibition invites to an imaginary walk on the Creative Quarter streets and to the discovery of the stories, the spaces, the ideas and the people that work and create in this area in Bucharest: designers, artists, architects and creators that define the quarter, as well as the hippest and most innovative spaces and businesses in the city.

The Ubikubi Young Designers Award exhibition (UYDA), hosted by Beans & Dots, presents the prototypes of the winning objects of the third edition of the UYDA contest and the boards of all the projects that entered the competition this year. The exhibited prototypes reflect the ludic exploration, but well documented, of some natural materials and accessible production technologies. At the same time, it proposes itself to highlight, in an interactive context, the creative potential of the Romanian young designers discovered during the competition.

Mnemonics: Collective Memories Define Our Territory is an esentialized scenography of the spaces between the flats in the Romanian cities, hosted by Mezanin, that puts into discussion the manner in which those perimeters evolved during the last decades of urban transformation. We will find again the bar on which the carpets were beaten, the metal rotary, the swings, the childhood games, but also the memories about the friends, the happenings and the funny stories in front of the flat and on the hallway, all under the universal sign of the key kept around the neck. Mnemonics was named by the foreign press as “unofficial playground” of the 2018’s Architecture Bienalle in Venice and will be for the first time open to the people in Bucharest in a reinvented version.

The nine days of festival open the doors of the architecture studios, the workshops of some Romanian brands, but also of some production houses and micro-communities in the Quarter. An workshop of contemporary dance, a yard sale of Romanian design or a silent party in the garden are just some of the events on the agenda.

The festival’s program, organized during Romanian Design Week 2019, is completed by a series of talks on design and architecture themes, sustainable fashion or game design themes, meetings of meet the neighborhood type, guided tours that let one discover the quarter’s hidden history, attics or the newest street-art works, workshops dedicated to the creative industries, collections and products launches, programs developed together by several members of the community, etc.

A special PosterJam Offbeat exhibition, dedicated to the Creative Quarter, that presents posters created by graphic designers and artists, both Romanian and foreigners, will be placed at Institute, The Café – 104-106, Stirbei Voda Street. The vernisage will take place Sunday, May 19th, starting 18:00 o’clock.

Moreover, the festival will host, in the interior garden of the National Art University of Bucharest a parkour module created by the Architecture Association Zerm in Roubaix, France, and decorated by the Romanian illustrator Saddo – Raul Oprea, part of the Romania-France 2019 season, in collaboration with La Condition Publique. Together with the installation of the module there will take place a demonstration of parkour organized alongside the Association  Traceurs.RO, the first and the biggest parkour practitioners’ organization in Romania. It will take place Sunday, May 19th, from 11:00 o’clock.

The Creative Quarter Design Festival ends with a series of parties on May 26th, among which a day party at Control Club, starting 15:00, alongside four Djs from the Quarter connected to the creative industries and a silent party in the J’ai Bistrot garden, from 20:00.
