Business, Digital & Media, e-Commerce

Online card payments volume in Romania increased by 38% in the first 9 months of the year, as Romanians paid for online products and services Euro 165.8M, with Euro 138.4M processed via PayU, according to a press release.

In almost 7 years, the volume of online payments increased from Euro 10M to over Euro 165M, keeping a constant 2 digits growth rhythm, even during the economic crisis period. According to our data, the online payments penetration rate increases slowly, being constant during the last 2 years. This shows that the online payments do not move the money from online, but it brings a real increase of revenues. The role of companies that process payments is to offer those products and services the merchants need and that would fit perfectly in their logistic and operational flows

When it comes of where Romanians brought online from, 86% of buys were made locally, with the rest in another 199 countries, mainly Italy, UK, Spain, France, Germany, Ireland, Belgium and Cyprus.

Although most of transactions are made in Romania, we notice an important increase of transactions from certain countries. For example, transactions from Hungary, Poland and UK increased by 25% (1st two) and 21%. This shows an important potential that online stores should consider
