Chatty cellist, stars in the new Go Compare campaign

Ads, Creativity’s famous TV tenor, Gio Compario, returns for his latest series of adverts this week in new spots devised for the comparison site by creative duo Chris and Sian Wilkins.

In the new advert, two cellists loudly discuss the difficulty of comparing energy bills. Fortunately the moustachioed opera singer, played by Welsh tenor Wynne Evans, is on hand centre-stage, to explain how can cater to their every need.

Philip Jewson and Paul Cartledge from Yellow Boat Music were involved from the beginning of the production process. They advised during the filming of the opera house scene as well as composing and arranging the music. During filming, Philip Jewson was stationed in the orchestra pit overseeing the musical performance of the conductor, cellists and orchestra. He also created bespoke pieces of music for the actresses playing the cellists. This was to ensure their performance looked natural and that the composed music and visuals were synchronised.

Philip Jewson explained:

The most important consideration was the humour of the dialogue, so I created simple cello parts within a more complex orchestral arrangement that helped maintain the humorous elements without overpowering the actresses’ performance.

I worked first with a guide read and had several rehearsals with the actresses using a music demo to prove that it would work before we committed to recording the piece with a full orchestra. It was essential to ensure the actresses were totally comfortable as they were going to be in the pit with a real orchestra. The main challenge was directing the timing of the music. I had to be close to them all but remain unseen! After the first few rehearsals I was confident we had a very professional team.

(…) The arrangement needed to be operatic and include a chorus of sopranos and altos that underpinned Wynne’s performance. I also had to teach the choir what to sing and check their performance was going to work.

The team at Yellow Boat also had to craft a musical arrangement that would complement the lead vocals of tenor Wynne Evans (Gio Compario).
